With its beautiful nature and stunning landscapes, Þórsmörk is one of the most popular hiking areas in Iceland. Þórsmörk is a valley located between three rivers, Krossá, Þröngá, and Markarfljót. The surrounding mountains are cut with small valleys and gorges making the scenery especially picturesque. It’s decorated with a wide vegetation of moss and small birch woods along with humming streams and the climate is warm, better than most areas in South Iceland. One has to experience this area first hand in order to truly understand its charm and beauty.
Þórsmörk is very well appreciated and loved by the Icelandic people and they visit it frequently all year round. There are lots of hiking paths in the beautiful volcanic landscape, with views over three glaciers; Eyjafjallajokull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull and the country’s most popular walking routes, Fimmvörðuháls, and Laugarvegur both go through the area. Getting there is an adventure in itself and part of the way is driven in a specially equipped bus that takes you into the rugged wilderness, crossing rough roads and glacial river.
If you want to experience the Þórsmörk area, make sure you do so with a guide or experienced people as quite a few streams and rivers have to be forded to get there and the glacial rivers are unpredictable and change constantly. A newly added feature of attraction, is a hot pool “Þórslaug”, to add to the delight of staying in Þórsmörk so be sure to bring your swimwear with you!
