Project Description

The Saga Centre in Hvolsvöllur offers a unique Njals’ Saga exhibition, where Njals’s Saga, the most famous of the medieval Sagas of Icelanders is introduced in several languages. The exhibition gives an overview of the world of the Sagas, the Viking age and the age of the settlement, but it was in the region of Hvolsvöllur that Njals’s Saga „took place“ one thousand years ago.

In The Saga Centre you will also find an modern art gallery, the Saga Hall – a replica of a Viking longhouse with historic artefacts, model of Thingvellir from AD 1000, the Co-op museum, the new Njals’s Saga tapestry in progress, elegant gift & souvenir shop, along with Viking costumes and medieval weapons for the kids to play with.

We really enjoyed our recent trip to the Saga centre. We wanted to learn more about the Icelandic Sagas and so we found the experience quite informative. The museum focused on Njall’s Saga (one of the most famous sagas, which also happened to take place in the same area, which we found to be quite cool). There was also a Viking dining hall, which offered snacks and drinks, along with a room featuring Njall´s Saga tapestry in progress. We also had the chance of dressing up like real Vikings, which was quite fun and perfect for kids 🙂
