Project Description

The ‘Elephant Rock’ is located on Heimaey in the Westman Islands and is a magnificent natural rock formation that really resembles an elephant head. Heimaey is a volcanic island full of odd shapes and landscapes but this natural rock formation has really impressed travellers around the world. The enormous shape is formed from basalt rocks that give a surface appearance of wrinkled elephant skin but it is believed to have formed by the lava of Eldfell, a nearby volcano. Please note that this natural gem is only accessible by boat and there are numerous tour operations in the Westman Islands offer boat tours where you can view the Elephant Rock.
