Project Description

Imagine Peace Tower is an outdoor work of art conceived by legendary artist, musician and peace advocate, Yoko Ono. It is in dedicated to the memory of John Lennon and is situated on Viðey Island in Reykjavík. It was unveiled on October 9th, 2007,  on John Lennon’s 67th birthday. It is composed of a tall powerful tower of light with the words IMAGINE PEACE inscribed on the well in 24 languages and serves as a beacon to world peace.

One of the mesmerizing features of the Imagine Peace Tower is that the strength, intensity, and brilliance of its light constantly changes with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions that are unique to Iceland – creating a clear pillar of light on a cloudless night. It symbolizes Lennon’s and Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace – which began in the sixties, was sealed by their marriage in 1969 and will continue forever, according to Yoko Ono.

The tower is lit every year and is visible from October 9th until December 8th, which is the anniversary of Lennon’s death. In addition, the Tower will illuminate from during Winter Solstice for one week, on New Year’s Eve and on Spring Equinox for one week. The construction and installation of the Imagine Peace Tower was done in collaboration between Yoko One, the City of Reykjavík, Reykjavík Art Museum and Reykjavík Energy which powers the tower.
