Mt. Herðubreið is a 1682m high table mountain located in Ódáðahraun, North-East of Iceland, near Askja Volcano. It is the national mountain of Iceland and often called the “Queen of Icelandic mountains”. There is a hiking trail to the top of the mountain, but due to loose rocks, it is very difficult and steep. Near the mountain lies an oasis called Herðubreiðarlindir with a campground and hiking trail. The mountain was formed beneath the ice sheet that covered Iceland during the last glacial period. Mt. Herðubreið is considered by many to be the most beautiful mountain in the country, rising from a lava desert, standing alone without any competition from other mountains and can, therefore, as a queen deserves, proudly express her dignity from any angle.
