Project Description

HENGIFOSS WATERFALL

Hengifoss is the third highest waterfalls in Iceland, measuring 128 meters falling from the plateau into a striking gorge. Colorful rock formations surround the waterfall, exposing different layers from volcanic eruptions in the Tertiary period, the time when Iceland was formed.

Hengifoss is one of the most popular attractions in East Iceland and is located in Hengifossá River, 34 km from the town of Egilsstadir on the way to Vatnajökull National Park. The waterfall and the big gorge is facing southeast so if you would like to view it while the sun shines on it, you will need to go during the morning.

It will take you around 40-60 minutes to walk from the parking lot to Hengifoss waterfall however, the hike is well worth it due to its beauty. You will pass another waterfall on the way called Litlanesfoss. It is crowned by exceptionally high basalt columns, making it unique and very picturesque.
